The IRS recently lost a case trying to tax a couple that bought millions of dollars in Visa gift cards, which they subsequently cashed out in order to earn 5% cash back. The court ruled that rebates for gift card purchases are not taxable.
Some stores may limit you to 1 transaction, but some stores won’t have any limits at all, which would allow you to scale the savings quite nicely.
If you buy 2 $200 Visa gift cards in store you’ll pay $398.90 including fees and you’ll earn 2,020 points (worth $30-$40) by charging it to an Ink Plus or Ink Cash card.
If you buy a $100 and a $200 Visa gift cards in store you’ll pay $297.90 including fees and you’ll earn 1,515 points by charging it to an Ink Plus or Ink Cash card.
You can use the gift cards to buy money orders at various stores and gas stations. Just use the last 4 digits of the card as the PIN number to cash them out.
Or you can donate the gift card to charity and get a receipt for the full face value.
Or you can give away a gift card as a wedding or Bar Mitzvah gift.

Are there really any stores left that do not limit to 1??? I doubt it. I gave up on Office Depot deals already. They became entirely insane in my area (Detroit, Michigan). Last I checked; they had a new rule- gift cards can only be purchased in CASH! That is on top of the limit to 1 🙁 To top it off, I have a $100 dud they gave me which has never been resolved.

I’m not getting the cheshbon of 2,020 and 1,515 points, if the purchase is even less than $400 or $300.
400×5 is 2000, and 300×5 is 1500.
6.95 purchase fee per card
But the total is less due to $15 off
