Update: Alive again!

Update: DEAD!

You can get $15 off $300 of Visa gift cards from Office Max or Office Depot stores from today through 5/28.

Use your Chase Ink Cash Card or Ink Plus card and get 5 points per dollar spent. Office supply stores never charge a fee for retailer gift cards such as Amazon and hundreds more, but these Visa gift cards can be used anywhere! Read about the current offer to earn 75,000 points on a new Ink Cash card here!

The IRS recently lost a case trying to tax a couple that bought millions of dollars in Visa gift cards, which they subsequently cashed out in order to earn 5% cash back. The court ruled that rebates for gift card purchases are not taxable.

Some stores may limit you to 1 transaction, but some stores won’t have any limits at all, which would allow you to scale the savings quite nicely.

If you buy 2 $200 Visa gift cards in store you’ll pay $398.90 including fees and you’ll earn 1,995 points (worth $30-$40) by charging it to an Ink Plus or Ink Cash card.

If you buy a $100 and a $200 Visa gift cards in store you’ll pay $297.90 including fees and you’ll earn 1,490 points by charging it to an Ink Plus or Ink Cash card.

You can use the gift cards to buy money orders at various stores and gas stations. Just use the last 4 digits of the card as the PIN number to cash them out.

Or you can donate the gift card to charity and get a receipt for the full face value.

Or you can give away a gift card as a wedding or Bar Mitzvah gift.

Or you can always use it for everyday spending while earning 5% or 5 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar everywhere!

Just to clarify, we’d need to purchase 2x$200 in separate multiple transactions to get multiple $15 discounts?

There are also multiple chase offers for Office Depot/Max now.

I just checked the hours of my local OD and their hours now are 9-4 7 days a week. What kind of a retail store keeps those hours? Seems to me they won’t be around for much longer.

dave

does this offer work online? i put the $300 gift card in my cart. but i dont see a price reduction?

MC

Chase just added an office depot deal to ink and sapphire, 10% back up to $8. that’s an added bonus on top of the points and free card.

Dan, can I make a suggestion; Maybe ALSO make part of the title “In Store Only” .
(ok, I know people will still ask, but it will help many people kmnow right away what we are dealing with while skimming through the many posts.)
Anyways, thanks for the tips to good deals! (that’s my way of saying thank you and no I am not complaining, but trying honestly to be helpful to eveyone 😉

It seems that AMEX will no longer count the gift card purchases toward the sign up bonus.

I’m “working” on some spending requirements and it looks that Chase and Bank of America are still OK with this. I do use small purchases (i.e., $400) not to draw attention.
