CVS: $5 ExtraBucks For Buying 2 Visa Gift Cards

CVS is offering $5 in ExtraBucks for buying 2 Visa gift cards.

The cost for Vanilla Reloads is $3.95 while gift cards are $4.95.  You can load either with $500 but Vanilla Reloads can be hard to find in some stores. The Extrabucks deal is only valid on gift cards, not Vanilla Reloads.

Vanilla Reloads can be loaded to Bluebird online, quick and easy.
The Vanilla Visa gift cards can be loaded to Bluebird at Walmart via the ATM or a cashier. Just use the last 4 digits of the card as the PIN.

Assuming you have $5 to spend at CVS (My local weekly ad shows Special K cereal on sale for just $1.99 and 2 liters of Coke for just 99 cents) then the cost for the 2 cards will be $4.90.

If you’re going for a spend threshold then getting in $1,000 of spend for $4.90 is a no-brainer, but even if not, earning 1,000 Starpoints (1,250 miles if you transfer in 20K increments) is worth well more than $4.90.  My local airport Sheraton has $200 rooms for 3K or 4K Starpoints and of course 4.5K BA miles is a free one-way flight (even last minute when that one-way flight costs $400-$700 as they do from NYC to places like Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Montreal, and Pittsburgh).

Dan,
Unfortunately our new local Walmart in Cleveland is getting a little smarter. I have loaded visa gift/debit cards hundreds of times with no problems. I actually just tried to load a few tonight onto Bluebird and the cashier asked me what kind of card is it. I told her it’s a debit card and she asked to see it. When she saw the words gift card written on top she said “we just had a meeting about these cards this morning and we’re not allowed to accept them anymore or we can get in trouble.” I’m pretty sure YMMV and someone may find a dumb cashier that doesn’t know this yet, just wanted to let you know that they’re getting a little smarter.

YYK

Anxiously waiting to hear for your workaround… 🙂

Dan

@YYK:
I try to never go to that WalMart back from the Severance days.
Most incompetent store I’ve ever stepped foot into.

Don’t have issues at other locations. Especially ones that maintain a working ATM where you don’t even need to speak to a soul to load your Bluebird.

YYK

@Dan:

It’s probably only a matter of time though before all Walmarts across the country adopt this policy and make their ATM machines smarter.

Dan

@YYK:
Were it that simple or that big of a priority they would have stopped it long ago.

Last week the deal was even better, yet you did not post it: Get $5 extrabucks rewards for buying a NetSpend Visa reloadable prepaid debit card, which can be loaded with $20 to $500 for a $4.95 fee. I could not find it in any of the five stores I went to last week, so I asked the cashier to sell me a Vanilla gift card instead and issue the extrabucks manually. The nice cashier gladly did so. I loaded it onto Bluebird at the Walmart ATM.

Claire

Here on the West Coast I had a similar experience to what YYK describes. Have loaded gift cards to BB at Walmart hundreds of times without incident…until yesterday when the cashier, on confirming the type of card I was using, said they JUST had a staff meeting and were told to take copies of my ID, Bluebird card, and “debit” (i.e. gift) card before proceeding with the reload. So I didn’t get turned away per se, but would’ve had to allow copies of my personal information to be made to continue the transaction. I walked away. Aside from whatever flag it may raise on my account with the Bluebird folks, I am certainly not willing to have my personal information floating around some unsecured Walmart back room.

Billiken

The ATM at the new Oakwood Commons Walmart has been down since they opened on October 16.

Ash

Is this once per cvs card?

Elton Yossie

@YYK: I am also encountering a lot more resistance to the Visa gift card reloads at a few different Walmarts here in NY, especially in Nassau County. Went to 3 different ones and all the reps basically told me the same thing they told YYK: “we’re not allowed to accept them anymore or we can get in trouble.” Seems like this gig is almost up!

DR

This is a public service announcement! If you are set on getting this deal, please be careful. Many of the Vanilla VGC are not working well for PIN transactions. Read this thread to see what I mean: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/manufactured-spending/1514089-problem-loading-bluebird-vanilla-visa-gc.html

Best best is the OneVanilla Visa Gift Card which has no issues so far.

YY 2

Link to CVS ad? all cities? dates?

ari

can you post a pic of a vanilla visa?

chani

I unfortunately told them credit instead of debit. Can I still upload them on bluebird with the last four digits.

Elton Yossie

@Claire: I encountered the almost identical harsh treatment here on Long Island (Nassau Country) Walmarts as well. I would warn anyone thinking of doing these Bluebird refills to be very careful as Walmart has notified their employees to be extra vigilant and to really harass you if you are using Via GC’s to refill your Bluebird. It is NOT worth the hassle or frustration of having to run from one Walmart to another to unload your GC’s.

Dan

@Billiken:
Exactly why I go to WalMarts with working ATMs

Mimi

All Walmart around Lakewood do not reload bluebird and the ATM are out of order!!!
Please fill a complain when you have time Howell. Brick. Neptune. Freehold!!!
Thanks for helping the comunity

Elton Yossie

@Mimi: All of the ATMs in Nassau Walmarts also don’t work and there is NO ONE to complain to. The “employees” at Walmart are some of the most indifferent, moronic and incompetent people you will ever encounter! Once in a while you may get “lucky” and someone might help you out. But, as stated earlier, more and more Walmarts are becoming more stringent on the Bluebird gig. Be careful.

Elton Yossie

@Dan: Where do you have working ATM’s?

Hamburg

Hi dan next Week even better deal . You can buy amex gift cards with NO FEES . In cvs

Dan

@Elton Yossie:
Complain to WM corp.

@Hamburg:
AMEX cards can’t be loaded to BB.

Hamburg

Hi dan thanks for replying but for earning miles or bonus spending its a great deal . Also next week in cvs buy a $100 gap gift card get $25 extra bucks.

yaako

Dan,
i was told by Bluebird that i cant add a vanilla debit card to my online Bluebird account., it has to be a bank debit card..

shmuel

@Mimi: I loaded gc’s at Brick walmart twice in past month via cashier. I just told them loading bluebird without mentioning debit or gift. Didn’t ask to see.

Dan

@Hamburg:
Not really, the key is finding cards that are easy to cash out.

@yaako:
Who said anything about loading online?

@shmuel:
Yup, trick is to go off-peak and help out the cashiers if they don’t know how to load with “action code 70.”

Hamburg

How does myvanilla work? found some in a brooklyn cvs. Also how come you never wrote about the paypal mycash cards those cards are very easy to find in cvs or rite aid they cost $3.95 you load it on your paypal account up to $500 a day $4000 a month and you withdrawl it to your bank account or shop online with it .

Dan's the man

I took a look at the circular as CVS.com and it shows an extra bucks rebate for PayPal prepaid and NetSpend repaid. Where do you see it’s for regular Vanilla Visa cards?

Dan

@Hamburg:
Because papal bans you for life for loading and cashing out.

mi

@shmuel:
in Neptune and brick they ask me to see my debit card and they saw the gift card …..
I didn’t want to make chilul H so I left

Hamburg

Out of my experiance paypal only bans you for life if you do this with the green dot card not with the mycash card ive been doing this for over 10 months never had any issues . Because the mycash card is made to send cash to other people .

Hamburg

Also i have great way of free spending and cashing out. but too good to make public contact me will let you know .

YY 2

so if no walmart around (NYC) then non of the cards would load BB on line?

Moe

@Hamburg: Paypal also hits you with a monthly maintenance fee.

Dan

@YY 2:
I’ve bought money orders at local stores with Vanilla GCs.

Hamburg

@moe i think you are wrong there is no maintenance fee on paypal

Dan chassid

I’m a little confused and new to this so any help would be appreciated.
I just bought 2 Baila reloads for 500$ each and the fee was 4.95 each (not sure how I was supposed to get a $5 credit.) I also just recieved my bluebird card from Amex. Now how do I get my vanilla money no my bluebird card… Online the only option to add money is from a bank account or debit card with a name….. Any help would be much appreciated

yaako

Dan,
“Vanilla Reloads can be loaded to Bluebird
online, quick and easy.”
this is what you wrote, if i didn’t understand correctly, pls describe, i tried loading from Bluebird website..

Moe

@Hamburg: I guess you missed the $4.95 Monthly Plan fee. Here is the link https://www.paypal-prepaid.com/account/terms/PayPal_Cardholder-Agreement_01Nov11.pdf

Dan
Elton Yossie

@YY 2: Correct. Walmart is catching on. It’s happened to me numerous times all over L.I.

hdawg

@Hamburg: I have a ton a debit gift cards I need to cash out, way to let me know?

Elton Yossie

@Dan: Correct! Only VISA GC’s.

Elton Yossie

@chani: Just say you meant “debit” and they will try to do the transaction for you, if they are nice/in the mood.

YY2

Where in nyc did anyone buy a money order w gc? who sells money order?

Esti

Dan, q about WM Citi card 10 off 100, would that work on ordering wm gc?

harv

I live in nyc and tried getting a MO from the post office but it was declined even though I put in a PIN. I don’t think it works at a post office.
A couple of friends and I tried some 7-11s and they all say you have to pay with cash.
There’s def a way, @Hamburg says he knows of something.

Dan

Post office has never worked for MO.

hamburg

sorry moe but paypal my cash is made for reguler paypal accounts not mastercard

Chraina

If you take a drive out to western NJ rural areas off rt 78 or 80 the cashiers at Walmart are nice and do not appear to have any experience with people loading BBs with gift cards. Eastern PA is also good for this. They didn’t get the memo.

Steve

Dan, do you know how much i can get for my starwood points?

i would like to sell. thanks

Matt

@Steve: @Steve: 2

Jack

@Hamburg: Also i have great way of free spending and cashing out. but too good to make public contact me will let you know .

How to contact you? Appreciate your inf..

Yossi

Time to start using the Serve card ? I can load $1000 a month on my CC in my pajamas without leaving my house ….

kranzman

@Hamburg:
Contact you how…?

CtownBin

@Dan:
Firstly Dan- thanks for the seminar last week, it was awesome! And discovering Bottlehouse Brewery with you afterwards was even better 🙂
I agree with you about the Severance Wal-Mart- what a disaster. And sadly, the new one at Oakwood Commons isn’t much better. Which one do you go to that rarely has issues? I find the one on Som Center only a tad better… do you head out to Bedford?

Dan is the man

I know what @hamburg means. you buy in rite aid a green dot shopping card with credit card at register $500 then you call green dot that you do not have a paypal account they will send you a full refund on a check with the $4.95 fee it takes about 7 business days the check should arrive

Elton Yossie

@Dan is the man: What is the gain in doing this? What CC do you use to buy the green dot?

Dpk88

Does this deal apply to MVDs or OneVanillas?

Dan is the man

You can buy it with any credit card the same way you buy a gift card .

Dan is the man

Guys wake up not all spending has to be vanilla or bluebird or prepaid debit cards in wal mart or refundable airline tickets there are free ways to spend like the rite aid green dot . Only rite aid lets you buy those with credit card . In cvs they only let you buy there cards with cash .

Dan is the man

Also i know a nice few cvs in brooklyn that sell vanilla reload cards . Address 325 9th street. 411 ditmas ave. bay pkwy 68 st 18 ave 65 st .also there is a way to spend for free and cash out when you return an item on different credit card most retailers let you .

Dan is the man

Have more ideas will post differint time .

Hamburg

Will post some massive way free spending stay tuned

Esti

Hamburg, nu?

Esti

just please no chilul hashem ideas…

M. Josef

Hi Dan –
My Duane Reade has lots and lots of Vanilla Reloads, but they said that they can only be purchased with CASH, and not a CREDIT CARD. Is this a Duane Reade rule that CVS doesn’t have, or is it just this one particular store ?
Thanks!

YYK

@Dan is the man:

And how do you cash out those green dot cards…?

YYK

scratch that – just saw ur answer. 2 questions though:

1. Hamburg mentions “free spend”, but what you’re mentioning costs $4.95 for $500 of spending.
2. Sounds to me like only a matter of time before Green Dot will require users to open Paypal accounts.

Dan is the man

The green dot card has a fee but in the refund you get everything back

harv

How long b4 greendot realizes that they’re getting a new insane amt of calls from NY Metro area callers saying they don’t have a paypal acct?!?!

Dan is the man

This loophole from green dot is working a long time already . Guys please do not abuse the system .its free sending and no fee.
