Update, 11/15: The Chase-Marriott 50% bonus offer ends today!

Update, 11/3: You can transfer AMEX points to Marriott with a 35% bonus through 12/31. That’s not a very lucrative bonus, but it might have its uses in limited situations.

Chase points normally transfer into Marriott points at a 1K:1K ratio, but until 11/15 you can get 1,500 Marriott points for every 1,000 Chase points.

Transferring points will also extend the 24 month expiration date from the date of your last qualifying activity.

This isn’t nearly as good as last month’s 70% bonus from Chase to Marriott.

I’d value Marriott points at about 0.6 cents each, so with typical usage you would only get a value of 0.9 cents per Chase point. You can do much better with other transfer or redemption options.

You can buy Marriott points with a promo here that can make more sense than a transfer.

However, if you need some Marriott points for a niche lucrative hotel redemption now and don’t want to spend out of pocket, then it might make sense to transfer or purchase points with this bonus.

For example, 5 nights at The Al Maha Dubai Resort, which has villas with private pools as their base room, all meals (even kosher meals!) included and 2 daily desert adventure activities included, can be had from 352K points instead of $5,760, a value of 1.64 cents per point:

5 nights at Zadún, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve which has villas with private pools as their base room and has meat and dairy gourmet kosher kitchens under Chabad hashgocha on-site, can be had from 480K points. In January high season, a room that’s 572K points instead of $9,792, a value of 1.71 cents per point:

5 nights at The S. Regis Bora Bora Resort which has villas with private pools as their base room, can be had from 428K points instead of $7,930, a value of 1.85 cents per point:

If you transfer Marriott points into airline miles at 60K increments you get a 25% bonus, so it can also make sense to transfer if you need a few points to hit a 60K increment.

60K Marriott points converts into 20-25K airline miles or 30K United miles, so it probably won’t be worth transferring Chase points just to transfer to an airline as it would take 40K Chase points to get 60K Marriott points with this transfer bonus. That is unless you really want miles with a Marriott partner like Aegean, Alaska, ANA, Copa, Etihad, Hawaiian, JAL, Korean, LATAM, Qantas, or Turkish that don’t transfer directly from Chase and you’re willing to accept a 40K:25K transfer ratio, or about .625 airline miles per Chase point.

I suppose with Alaska short-haul awards for just 4.5K points in coach or 9K in business it can make sense though? That would be like redeeming about 7.2K or 14.4K Chase points for an award like NYC to Cleveland, Detroit, Montreal, Pittsburgh, or Toronto, or Newark or Philadelphia to Chicago:

You can make the same argument for transfers to JAL. Read this post for more about using those miles for travel on AA or Alaska.

Keep in mind resort fees aren’t covered under points redemptions as opposed to redeeming through chase portal, it’s build into the price
