United elite members can book travel to Tahiti for just 19,250 miles each way and non-elite members can book travel for just 22,750 miles each way. Normally travel to Tahiti costs 35K miles.

A normally 70K award ticket for as low as 38.5K miles:

Note that United charges a close-in mileage surcharge. Here’s how to avoid paying extra on a round-trip.

Promo terms:

This promo is only available for United coach travel and is not valid with a stopover.

  • Discounted Saver Award is only valid for travel in United Economy from the mainland U.S., Alaska and Canada to Papeete (PPT).
  • Tickets must be booked no later than 11:59 p.m. ET on 1/24/20.
  • Offer is valid for travel completed on or before 3/12/20.

Having a Chase United Consumer card or a Chase United Business card greatly expands the saver award space that you can book.

Use a card like Sapphire Preferred to earn 2 points or Ink Preferred or Sapphire Reserve to earn 3 Chase points per dollar spent and get free trip cancellation/interruption insurance, travel accident insurance, luggage insurance, trip and luggage delay protection, and more!

From Papeete you can take a ferry or short flight to the beautiful island of Moorea, to the stunning resorts of Bora Bora, or to the many other islands of French Polynesia.

Unfortunately the arrival times into Papeete mean that you will have to overnight there as there are no later flights to connect to other islands in French Polynesia.

Bora Bora and the Maldives are both famous for luxury resorts with incredible overwater bungalows. I’ve been to the W Maldives and the S. Regis Maldives, but I’ve yet to go to Bora Bora. That’s been partially due to how easy it is to find amazing business and first class awards to the Maldives, point deals that I’ve taken advantage of, and the ideal Maldives weather taking place during winter in the US.

The weather in French Polynesia in the winter is rainy, peak season is from May through October during the dry season.

IHG has 2 properties in Bora Bora, Marriott has 2 properties, and Hilton has 1 hotel there. If you can find award availability at the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort Thalasso Spa you can book right into an overwater villa.

IHG has hotels in Papeete and Moorea and Hilton has a Moorea property as well.

Papeete even has a Jewish community and an Orthodox shul, though unfortunately it’s not within walking distance of the Intercontinental Tahiti. There’s little information about it online, so I’d love to hear about it if you’ve been there.

Have you been to French Polynesia? Do you have plans to go in the future?

Dan, a little off direct topic, is there a way to book infant on lap with points? I just booked united award tickets to Israel, and was charged $180 each way. Thanks

Yochai

They charge 10% of the cash price so If you book as a round trip it should be cheaper.

Phil Coulson

It’s a magical place

Why is there only one newish property in BoB (conrad) when the Maldives has another new place popping up every other day

Maxi

Are there cheap Airbnb there?

I won’t fly coach on a flight to there or Maldives. Too long. Must lay down flat or I go someplace else. But, this might be ok for others who don’t have physical issues and and handle coach like I did when I was younger. Too bad United isn’t discounting their full lay down seats. I heard the new ATN planes have worse seats than the previous planes.
