I’ve had to privilege to visit the beautiful island of Maui some 10 times in the past 15 years, making lifelong memories and friends along the way.
I’ve shared some of those trip notes here a decade ago and ended my 747 journey there as well.
We also became friends with a photographer there and were devastated when she passed away.
In December we spent a day enjoying Lahaina’s Front Street, from the Maui Pineapple Store’s delicious all-Pineapple drinks to Warren and Annabelle’s awesome magic show, the Banyan Tree, and even getting my Maui Jim sunglasses repaired for free at their former headquarters in Lahaina. It’s crazy that it’s all gone now.
Maui Pineapple Store, Lahaina:
JJ spent a Simchas Torah in Lahaina with dozens of Jews, which he said was one of his most memorable in his life.
Some of the most awesome people you’ll find on Maui are Mendel and Chana Zirkind, who operate the Maui Kosher Farm. It’s a hub for Jewish life on Maui and home to the island’s only Mikvah.
My kids loved their tour of the Kosher Farm several years ago and the dinners you can enjoy there are always special.
The outdoor shul and dining room that Mendel hand-built on the farm:
Mendel Zirkind tells me that they’re hosting dozens of locals and tourists in their house, cottages, cabins, and tents on their farm. They have power and plenty of food, but he shares that many of their guests have lost their homes and businesses and are just devastated as they have nothing left.
Hosting people at the Farm this week:
The Zirkinds have started a fund to help those who are now in need, which you can donate to here.
I’m sure the funds will be put to good use.
If you did have plans to travel to Maui within the next couple of weeks, change those plans to visit another island.
If you are on Maui, airlines like Hawaiian and Southwest are offering $19 flights to Oahu.
Let’s pray for everyone’s safety and that the people of Maui will be able to recover quickly from this tragedy.

Did I hear $19 flights!?
Was the Hyatt Regency destroyed?
Just devastating to see Lahiana all gone đ We also enjoyed the Maui gold pineapple store in March 23. The absolute best! The Hawaiian culture is so precious!
Terrible just terrible stuff :/
I met a doctor from Hawaii once who said that his children ran a Jewish farm in Hawaii, is this them?
There’s only one.
Thanks for spreading awareness. I just donated. I wouldn’t have heard about it otherwise
There is a major issue with Shabbos in Hawaii
No one knows if the Sabbath is Saturday or Friday
No one religious should stay the weekend
i believe that most poskim say that Hawaii is at the end of the world. Australia and japan are more problematic.
