-The Chase Ink Business Cash Card is currently offering $500 or 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after spending $3,000 within 3 months.

Which card is better?

All of these are excellent cards, but they each have their own unique benefits and uses, so there’s no clear cut answer for everyone.

The good news is that you can convert between all 3 of these card types as needed. That means if you would rather get the larger Ink Preferred bonus and decide later on that you prefer the spending categories on the no annual fee Ink Cash or Ink Unlimited card, you can call to convert it. If you later decide you want to take advantage of the benefits of the Ink Preferred card you can convert it back to that again.

To get a better grasp on the pros and cons of each card, let’s start off with a comparison chart:

And now let’s go into some more detail:

Signup bonus:

-The Ink Cash and Ink Unlimited cards are marketed as cash back cards, which is why it says that they have a $500 signup bonus for spending $3,000 in 3 months. Don’t be fooled by that, those cards actually earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points that can be cashed out for 1 cent each and you will receive 50,000 points for signing up and spending $3,000 in 3 months. Previously the public signup bonus on the Ink Cash card has ranged from 20K-30K points. 50K Chase points is the best public signup bonus for these cards! In fact it’s one of the richest signup bonuses I’ve ever seen on a card that has no annual fee. Click Here to get more details on these cards and compare to other business travel cards!

-The Ink Preferred card card is marketed as a points card, so it has a 80,000 point bonus for spending $5,000 in 3 months. Click Here to get more details on this card and compare to other business travel cards!

You can apply for all 3 of these cards for the same business. You can combine points between all of the Chase Ultimate Rewards earning cards in your household.

Cell phone insurance:

One unique benefit only found on the Ink Preferred card is cell phone protection.

If you paid your previous month’s cell phone bill with your Ink Preferred card and your phone is damaged or stolen, Chase will cover the cost of fixing or getting a replacement phone. The maximum Chase will pay is $600 and there is a $100 deductible. In other words if your phone is stolen and originally cost $800, Chase will pay you $600. If your phone originally cost $600, then Chase will pay you $500.

You can file up to 3 claims per 12 month period.

This covers all of the phones on your plan, so this card can save you a small fortune in insurance premiums.

You can read the full details of the benefit in the Ink Preferred’s benefit guide here.

Spending categories:

-The Chase Ink Cash card is part of my Chase Quadfecta and is highly recommended for anyone trying to maximize their spending.

It earns a whopping 5 points per dollar at office supply stores and on internet, cable, and cell phone bills on up to $25k/year. It also earn 2 points per dollar on at gas stations and restaurants on up to $25k/year. You can earn the bonus points on up to $25K in annual spending on the 5 point categories and up to $25K in annual spending on the 2 point categories. Again, these categories are advertised as 5% cash back and 2% cash back, but you will actually get 5 or 2 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent in those categories.

You can even earn 5 points per dollar for cell phones that are charged on your bill or bought from sites like Samsung.

You can earn 5 points per dollar for hundreds of other stores by buying gift cards at office supply stores like Office Depot/Max and Staples. If you shop at Amazon, Airbnb, Bed Bath & Beyond, Bloomingdale’s, BP, Cabela’s, Delta, DisneyLand/DisneyWorld, eBay, Express, Gap, Google Play, Groupon, Home Depot, iTunes, JCrew, Kohl’s, Lands End, LLBean, Lowe’s, Macy’s, Marshalls, Nike, Nordstrom, Safeway, Sears, Shell, Southwest, Starbucks, StubHub, Target, TJMaxx, Uber, Whole Foods, and much more, you can be earning 5 points per dollar by buying their gift cards at office supply stores on an Ink Cash card. Some gift cards are available online and many more are available in store.

Your local school or charity will be more than happy to accept donations of Amazon gift cards for supplies or any other useful gift cards for chinese auctions, raffles, fundraisers, etc. They will give you a tax deductible receipt for the full face value-the price you paid for the gift cards. And at the same time you’ll earn 5 points per dollar. So while doing good you can still get a nice chunk of points and you’ll save on your taxes!

You can even buy $300 Visa gift cards from Staples from the comfort of your home, which will earn 5 points per dollar.

Office Depot/Max and Staples often run promotions to save even more on Visa gift cards.

-The Chase Ink Unlimited card is also a critical part of my Chase Quadfecta and is highly recommended for anyone trying to maximize their spending. It fulfills the same function as the Chase Freedom Unlimited card by earning 50% bonus points, or 1.5% cash back or 1.5 points per dollar everywhere.

However as the Ink Unlimited is a business card, it has several advantages over the Freedom Unlimited as described below.

-The Chase Ink Preferred card earns 3 points per dollar on up to $150,000 in annual spending on travel, internet, cable, phone, shipping, and advertising on social media and search engines.

A unique benefit of this card is that it earns 3 points per dollar on Bill Pay with Plastiq. People have gotten 3 points per dollar for rent payments, tax payments, or even buying a car! Plastiq will send out a check to the merchant of your choice. Read more here.

Cash back on top of points:

All of these cards are also eligible for additional cash back via Visa Savings Edge.

That means you can earn points plus cash back at Chevron, Sheetz, AutoZone, Texaco, Boost Mobilem Alamo, National, MGM hotels, Lenovo, Wyndham hotels, and more.

0% APR:

The Ink Cash and Ink Unlimited cards offes 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers for 12 months.

While carrying balances on consumer cards can have a very harmful effect on your credit score, because the Ink cards are business cards, those balances won’t hurt your credit score!

Business card information, benefits, and 5/24:

These are business cards, but you may already have a business that needs a card to keep track of expenses. For example if your name is Joe Smith and you sell items online, or if you have any other side business and want a credit card to better keep track of business expenditures you can open a business credit card for “Joe Smith” as the business. You don’t need to file any messy government paperwork to be allowed to do that. Just be sure to select “Sole Proprietorship” as the business type and just use your social security number in the Tax Identification Number field.

It’s important to just write your own name as the business name if you are just applying for your own small business as a Sole Proprietorship that doesn’t have any business paperwork.

If you’re like me and you run more than one business you can signup for multiple of the same card for each business to manage each businesses expenses separately.

All Chase cards that earn Ultimate Rewards are subject to 5/24 restrictions. That means it will be hard to get approved if you have been approved for 5 or more consumer credit cards in the past 24 months. Read more about that here.

However, it’s important to note that business cards from most banks, including Chase business cards, do not get added to your 5/24 count of recently opened cards. That’s because business cards from most banks don’t show up on your personal credit report and the 5/24 count is based off of your personal credit report. That means that applying for these cards won’t “hurt” your 5/24 count.

Another benefit of the card not reporting on your personal credit report is that when you spend money on personal cards your credit score will be hurt even if you pay your bill on time. A whopping 30% of your credit score is based on credit utilization. You can pay off your card bill before your statement is generated to avoid that, but that takes effort and laying out money well before you have to. Additionally it’s good to have the statement close with a couple dollars to show the card is active and being paid every month. On an business cards from banks like AMEX and Chase it’s just not reported, so you can wait until the money is due without it having a negative effect on your score. That also means if you close the card, it won’t have an effect on your credit score.

Cash back or miles:

You can cash out the points earned on these cards for 1% cash back. I hope that you won’t do that.

The Ink Preferred card allows you and anyone in your household to transfer Chase points into miles. It also allows you to use points at a value of 1.25 cents each towards travel.

However if you have a Sapphire Reserve card you’ll be better off transferring the points there for a value of 1.5 cents each towards travel. Click Here to get more details on this card and compare to other cards!

The Ink Cash and Ink Unlimited cards can’t transfer points directly into miles, but Chase allows you to transfer points to cards where they can be transferred into miles or redeemed for a greater value. My goal is to receive a value of 2 cents per point via transfers to miles and that makes the 1.5 point categories worth 3% back, the 2 point categories worth 4% back, the point categories worth 6% back, and the 5 point categories worth 10% back. The minimum value you can receive for your points is 1.5 cents each thanks to Sapphire Reserve and that makes spending on this card worth a minimum of 2.25% back for the 1.5 point categories, 3% back for the 2 point categories, 4.5% back for the 3 point categories, and 7.5% back for the 5 point categories.

The Ink Cash and Ink Unlimited signup bonus is marketed as $500, but it will actually come in the form of 50,000 points which are worth $750-$1,000.

The Ink Preferred signup bonus is 80,000 points, worth $1,200-$1,600.

If you or anyone in your household has one of the following cards, you can transfer your points into miles:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve (Earn 50K points for spending $4K in 3 months. $450 annual fee, less $300 annual free travel spend=$150 net annual fee. Allows all points to be used at a value of 1.5 cents each towards travel).
    • Click Here to get more details on this card and compare to other cards!
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred (Earn 50K points for spending $4K in 3 months. $95 annual fee waived for first year).
    • Click Here to get more details on this card and compare to other cards!
  • Chase Ink Business Preferred (Earn 80K points for spending $5K in 3 months. $95 annual fee).
    • Click Here to get more details on this card and compare to other cards!
  • Other no annual fee Chase cards that also earn Ultimate Rewards points include:
    • Chase Freedom Click Here to get more details on this card and compare to other cards!
    • Chase Freedom Unlimited Click Here to get more details on this card and compare to other cards!

Why I prefer miles over cash back: Chase Ultimate Rewards are highly versatile and valuable:

  • If I want to stay in a 5 star Park Hyatt in the Maldives, Melbourne, NYC, Paris, Sydney, or Tokyo that would cost over $1,000/night, I can instantly transfer 25-30K points to Hyatt to do that, a value of up to 6 cents per point.
  • If I need a last minute flight from Cleveland (or Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Montreal, Orlando, Pittsburgh, Toronto, etc) to NYC that can cost $500 each way, I can instantly transfer 7.5K points to British Airways to book a short-haul on American with no last minute booking fees. Or if American doesn’t have availability I can instantly transfer 10K points to United for their short-haul award. That’s a value of up to 7 cents per point.
  • If I want to stay in a non-chain hotel that costs $300/night and don’t want to pay cash, I can redeem 20K points for the room thanks to my Sapphire Reserve card’s minimum redemption value of 1.5 cents per point.
  • If I want to fly in a $25,000 ANA First Class Suite round-trip from the US to Tokyo, I can instantly transfer 110K or 120K points to Virgin Atlantic. That’s a value of up to 23 cents per point.
  • If I want to book a $2,285 business class ticket on Air Canada to Tel Aviv I can redeem 152K points for the flight thanks to my Sapphire Reserve card’s minimum redemption value of 1.5 cents per point. Plus I’ll earn 25K United miles as it’s considered a paid flight.
  • If I want to fly in a $11,000 Korean first class suite one-way from the US to South Korean, I can instantly transfer 80K points to Korean and take advantage of their amazing award availability. That’s a value of up to 14 cents per point.
  • And thousands of other possibilities from Singapore couples suites to booking Southwest awards with 2 free bags and free cancellations, to stealing 2nd base in middle of an MLB game.

Both of these cards are excellent cards with strong signup bonuses and spending categories. Best of all you aren’t loicked into your choice as you can convert between these 2 cards.

I opened up more then 24 months ago united mileageplus explorer after a year i  downgraded it to the no annual fee version mileageplus card.
Would like to get the explorer sign up bonus again will I get approved if I have the mileageplus card already or is it  considered same product?

Sam

Got rejected for the business cash. Not sure why, credit is great and haven’t opened any new cards in a while. The legitimacy of my “business” is debatable, so I don’t feel comfortable calling to dispute the denial, but a friend of mine with equally impeccable credit and an actual large business also got rejected.

Lili

Applied for both of these UR business cards in October 2017 and in February 2018, got rejected for both. TU scores 807 and 800. Got 2 credit checks per each application (EX and TU)! Called reconsideration, 2 times on first application – each time “we’ll let you know”, still rejected. The reason given – too many accounts (4+1biz with Chase), yet was not allowed to move credit, or to close an account to open a new one. Really not liking Chase at this point!

Abe

I have the Ink Bold and they changed me automatic recently to Ink Plus, Can i apply for the Preferred and get the bonus or i need to downgrade first my ink Plus to Ink cash?
Also, does it hurt for credit to close a business CC?

Jack

Can I apply for both?

Recon

I signed up for the Business Cash after your last post. Since it’s a business card, Chase told me that I need to create a separate login and cannot use my personal login which has my Sapphire card. So how can I transfer the rewards points from the Ink Business card to my personal Sapphire card Ultimate Rewards account?

David

If apply for the preferred and then downgrade to cash is there still a way I can get the cash bonus in the future?

Steve Dorfman

I got declined for the business cash. Applied with my name as sole propriatorship. The reason for the decline was that my business did not generate enough revenue, and that i have “too” much credit among all credit cards. I called to reconsider twice, no luck.

I have the inc business prefferred. Was thinking of cancelling it. and then re-applying for the cash card.

Thoughts?…

Enrique

Do you know how long these promotions will last for?

The above comparison chart is great! Can you extend the chart with the other products UR products (Reserve, etc…)? Thanks!

Enrique

I still have the Ink Business Plus. Any reason to still keep it if I get the Preferred or Cash card?

JJJ

i currently have ink business plus. just to make sure, can i apply for both the business preferred and the business cash and get the sign up bonuses? and same question as enrique’s – any reason to keep the business plus? TIA Dan.

Yehuda

I opened a Ink preffered using a business EIN, got the bonus, then I downgraded it to the Ink cash.
Can I open another ink cash card using my SSN and my name as the business, and be eligible for the Ink cash bonus?

moish

I recently got approved for the ink business preferred. Can I go ahead and get the 80,000 point sign up bonus and then convert my card to the business ink cash and still be eligible for the 50,000 point bonus?

Lesko

Hi,

Would applying for both cards at the same time, generate 1 or 2 Credit Pulls?

Lynn

Basically if you have the reserve the ink cash is the better option??

dave

Was rejected for ink cash for being 5/24. In June one card will drop. Can I keep calling recon to use that credit hit in April until June to reconsider or better to just reapply in June and not create too much noise?

ari

dan my wife just got approved for the ink cash can she call a rep and ask to swich to preffered and get the larger sign up bonus??

Peysach

which card offers the best points for office printing

Jordan

Hi Dan! Thanks for an awesome site! I just applied for the Ink Cash and Preferred. I called recon and was approved for the Cash but they told me since I am a new business without prior business credit, they can’t approve me for the second card, despite my excellent personal credit. Do you have any advice? I tried HUCA but the application was already denied? Thanks!

Sam

I have the ink cash open under my name with my SSN. I also have an EIN under my name. Can I apply with the EIN as well – same business name (my name)?

Jacob

I have the old business Ink Plus. Would you recommend getting the Ink cash or Ink preferred for this sign up bonus ?

Anom

I want to apply for the Ink cash but I don’t have a set annual income, as I work in sales. I have at least $50K between savings and a retirement account. Can I enter $50k or only sales income?

Renee

I applied for the ink cash card at the end of March after you posted about the 50,000 sign up bonus, and just got my first statement. It’s telling me that I’m getting only 4 points per dollar spent on internet, cable and only one point per dollar at gas stations and restaurants. No idea why I’m not getting 5 and 2 respectively. Any ideas?

R_K

I applied, but got a letter in the mail asking for some documentation – as in a certificate from the state, saying I’m a sole porp. Tried to call and got the supervisor who insisted on that I will have to get that. Any recommendations?

Anaughtymoose

Do the points earned from the bonus categories get applied every billing statement like other cards, or is it on the account anniversary when the cap resets?

Moishe

What card do you suggest I get, I have a small business, is there a card with no annual fee that can transfer to any airline? I am a beginner at this

Sasha

Hey Dan, I sell some craft works on a seasonal basis and makes only $80, i remember reading somewhere that if ones revenue is less than $100, the application will not be approved. Is that true for Chase or Citi? Thanks!

SR

Dan, any input on the new ink Business Unlimited card vs the two in this post?
Thank you!

Schlesmom

My Israeli kids have new businesses and make most of their business purchases in Israel. Aside from a Suntrust Debit/Mastercard, they only have one other credit card in their name, the Delta Amex Gold card. Which card would you recommend for them? And if it’s the Ink Cash card could they transfer their points into miles on my Chase Sapphire Preferred card?

avohom

I have all three! All are excellent cards!

Abey

If applying under personal name, how would I argue for getting the same card again? Rep will for sure ask why I didn’t apply under respective biz names
And how soon to apply again ?

neil

I was rejected from chase for having too many cards. I only have one business card but they merged my business and personal together. Said that is the way it works.

Elinyct77

Great job. Thank you.
Seems like the chase eco system is the only game in town.
Any other cards/bank that offer anything similar that worth to get invested in?

mark

if I have a chase ink business plus from a few years ago. What will that become when I get my new card in December? from the categories above I would rather the ink cash for office supply benefits. TIA.

ariel

sam

Can Swiss or United Gift cards be bought online with the ink Cash?

yola

Off topic a bit. I just closed my Marriott business card before the 2nd year annual fee is due. I have an open reservation with the free night certificate that i received after the first anniversary. Do you think Chase will notify Marriott and my reservation will get cancelled, or will it stand. Thanks for your amazing work!!

weiss

chase will added more airlines for points transfer – soon ?

yp

i closed down my hyatt and ihg cards a few months back and I am concerned about expiration so I called up recently to ask for 100 or a thousand courtesy points to extend expiration and they told me my card is still registered to the account so there is no need for expiration, and it is still registered many months after I close it is there a reason?

Michael

I currently have the sapphire reserve card and want the sign up bonus for the sapphire preferred card. can i get the the Preferred while i still have the reserve or do i need to downgrade the reserve and then get the preferred? Thanks so much in Advance

Dave

I applied and got this message” We need to review your request a little longer. We will let you know of our decision by U.S. mail. This could take up to 30 days.”

Should I call in?

Steve Gold

The link to the chase business unlimited says $500 after spending $3000 not 50k points. Is this correct?

JJ

From the post:

“The Ink Cash and Ink Unlimited cards are marketed as cash back cards, which is why it says that they have a $500 signup bonus for spending $3,000 in 3 months. Don’t be fooled by that, those cards actually earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points that can be cashed out for 1 cent each and you will receive 50,000 points for signing up and spending $3,000 in 3 months. “

ahchiu

Dan, I applied for the Ink Unlimited card under my name as a Sole Prop, but they told me they need more documents to verify the business. They said they need some filings with the sate to prove my Sole Prop. This is my first time applying for a business card, so I did some research and there is no such thing for a Sole Prop. How do I get approved for the card?

Mege

Dan I have 2 questions:
I have over 100k Chase ultimate rewards points and over 100k SPG points. First of all, how do I find out if there are mileage tickets available before I transfer the points to the airline and also which points should I transfer, SPG or Chase Ultimate Rewards. Thank you

Dan I do wish you had answered my question about whether it made sense to use my last 5/24 on the 100k Marriott or do biz cards and save for better offers. Too late now….but I’d still appreciate your expertise

If I have the Ink cash and earned 5 points per dollar on $25000 of qualifying purchases and then converted it to ink preferred would I then be eligible to earn 3 points per dollar in categories up to the 150k cap ?

1) Do you have to have a business EIN in order to apply to the “Ink Preferred”?
2) Do you get with the “Ink Preferred” the “2 free United Club passes every year” (I don’t see it listed)?
3) Do you get with the “Ink Preferred” a Global Entry/Pre-Check for free.

1. No ss is fine.
2. No, what makes you think you get it??
3.NO
4. If its not there then its not included in the card, wouldn’t you think dan would put that info on the site for all to see if it was there?

just read the post carefully and what you see is whats there, nothing else, cant write it much clearer then dan did.

Earn 3 points per $1 on the first $150,000 spent on travel and select business categories.
Is property tax considered as business category?

does the following email response mean i got rejected and should call recon immediately?

“We have received your request for a Chase credit card. We’ll let you know our decision by U.S. mail. This could take up to 30 days. “

Hi Dan, I got the Ink Preferred and Ink unlimited in last five months. It sound like the third one, the Cash is key especially to the 5 point office supply thing. Will applying for a third send red flags to get things shut down or should I just convert one of these two to the one I don’t have. I Should have the 80k bonus spending met in about a month (that’s the most recent one I got).

btw, I had to appeal to branch to get first one approved and reduce credit on a personal one. Second one came approved with no issue. The reduction was because they said chase already giving as much credit as they wanted to.

Lastly any difference in using the 1.5 one I think unlimited it is vs the Freedom, which I think is also 1.5 per dollar spent for non bigger categories? Thanks! Love this site.

Hi Dan
Are you still getting the 3x bonus on Plastiq? I recently used the service and only received the standard rewards

Mendel

The 3x Plastiq bonus is dead indeed. Post should be updated to reflect that.

Is everyone who is under the business cell phone plan covered if the business pays for the bill using the preferred card?

Sam

Dan, i currently have saphire reserve, Ink Plus, business preferred and business unlimited.. DO I qualify for Ink Cash? thanks

David

I got the ink business preferred. What’s the best way to use the 80,000 points?

What is the advantage of ink unlimited over ink cash?

jeff

i have the ink preferred and the annual fee is coming up. i am thinking of downgrading it to the unlimited and then applying for the cash one. does this sound ok? tia…

Steven

Hi, everything is laid out clearly as usual. Wondering: I have great credit, opened new, 1st, business that will hopefully have spending as my supplies will come from purchases on the card. If I’m not likely to travel much, should I get one of these or the 2% spark card? Hope to be spending upwards of $25000-$50,000 this year.

Dan – I’ve tried to sign up for a new Chase Business card via the links on cardratings.com. None of the Chase links work for me, from two computers on two different internet networks. The other cards all work, just not Chase.

esther12

dan, if I open ink preferred with annual fee and after I get the points, downgrade it. will I still have to pay for annual fee? will they prorate it? can I downgrade to freedom?

YEHUDA

I applied for the ink business cash, and was rejected due to my business being too new. I really need this card, any advice how I can try to get it? I called and spoke with someone, they tried to reapprove, and still came back that the business is too new.

Dan,
Is this up to date? “80K points for spending $5,000 in 3 months.”
I only see 100k for $15k spend.
