I aim to receive a value of 1.5 cents or more per point when I transfer them into airline miles or hotel points. But sometimes the value of an airline mile or hotel point can be under 1 cent each. In these cases it’s great to have a card that allows you to redeem points for paid travel at a value that beats the 1 cent per point level where you can cash the points out.
Which AMEX Platinum card should you have:
There is no obvious answer as to which you should have, but personally I prefer the Business Platinum card as it features hybrid points, as I’ll describe below.
Let’s walk through the benefits to see which cards is best for you.
Annual fee:
- AMEX Business Platinum: $695
- AMEX Consumer Platinum: $695
Winner: Tie
Annual fee for additional Platinum cardholders:
- AMEX Business Platinum: $350 per card.
- AMEX Consumer Platinum: $195 per card.
These cards allow for lounge access, elite status, Global entry, and AMEX protections, but not for additional monthly and annual credits.
Winner: Consumer Platinum
Annual fee for additional companion cardholders:
These cards allow for Global entry credits once every 4 years, an incredible benefit for cards with no annual fee!
Winner: Tie
Points rebate on paid airfare:
- AMEX Business Platinum: 35% rebate on a US airline of your choice in coach, 35% rebate on all airlines in business or first class. Maximum rebate of 1,000,000 points per calendar year, though this can be increased through targeted offers.
- AMEX Consumer Platinum: None
You can combine points from all of your American Express Membership Rewards cards onto your most valuable card, so that they are worth the most for travel.
The reason why I value the business card more that the consumer card is that it allows you to use your AMEX points as hybrid points. The Business Platinum card allows you to choose between using your points for paid airfare at an increased value per point, or transferring your points into miles.
If you redeem for a premium cabin ticket on any airline or in coach on the airline of your choice, you’ll get a 35% points rebate, which will mean you’ll get a value of at least 1.54 cents per point. The value can be even higher if AMEX has a discounted insider fare available on your route. You can get a rebate of up to 1,000,000 points per year.
Or you can transfer points into miles, which is how you can buy a $459 United ticket for 6,500 points.
I call that ability to choose between the best of both worlds “hybrid points.” It’s something you won’t get on the consumer Platinum card. If you have the no annual fee Blue Business Plus AMEX you’ll earn 2 points per dollar everywhere on up to $50K in annual spending. If you also have an AMEX Business Platinum card that means you’ll earn a minimum of 3.08% back towards airfare thanks to hybrid points!
The increased value of points set a minimum value you can get from your points. You can get a higher value for your points by transferring them into airline miles and hotel points, but having the ability to use your points at an increased value for paid travel makes them into “hybrid points.” You can choose to redeem them for either paid travel or award travel, depending on which provides a better value.

Both of these cards come laden with great benefits and for many people, it may pay to have both to take advantage of these benefits. To determine your winner, I’d suggest assigning your personal value to each of these benefits and see which card comes out ahead of the annual fee for your needs!

Dan, so if I’m understanding this correctly, if one has the AMEX Business card, does it makes sense to add an AU for an additional $300 to get the Dell and other credits rather than sign up for the AMEX Personal card??
The AUs do not get those credits.
Dell credit is per account, not user
Is the personal platform being reported to the credit report? Or count towards 5/24?
Yes.
Yes.
I thought charge cards are not reported??
What does “additional unique amenity” mean at fine hotel and resorts? Didn’t they used to offer a credit for anything like spa and food at the hotels?
Don’t they charge annual fee right away?
Yes?
how do I sign up for a priority pass card? when I go to their website they have 3 tiers but amex site isn’t clear which one is covered by card benefit and don’t want to enter my CC in infor and get hit with a charge. Please let me now
Clicked on the link in the Priority Pass section of this post?
can these miles be used for a statement credit
@dan you are missing the 10x points per dollar on the first $25,000 at small business for Consumer Plat. That could potential be 250,000 points. (Almost every non chain store is considered small business)
I tried using both cards at a delta sky club but was told I could only enter with a delta boarding pass. Is that correct info? Thanks!
That’s the new rule there.
Dan,
I have 3 of the platinum cards. Is there any way to pay now for CLEAR, for the next 3 years?
I don’t believe so.
Thanks Dan for the comprehensive and clear post. Just have one question regarding the annual airline credit (business).
Can you elaborate how a business platinum member can use the 200 in 2021. Does the credit build up in your account from year to year?
I posted below the relevant text. thank you
Every calendar year, you can get a $200 credit for airline fees. If you apply now that means you’ll get back $600 in fees during your first cardmembership year with $200 back in 2021, $200 back in 2022, and $200 back in 2023.

Hey Dan
I have the business version. If my AU’s are green cardholders, would each one trigger their own independent GE credit or just the primary which is platinum. Thanks
Each get their own.
Thank you for your response. Are you sure?
Amex chat advised me otherwise-
“Thank you so much for waiting and checking the terms and conditions of the said benefit, it shows here:
For Gold, Corporate, Platinum, and Centurion Cards, each Additional / Employee Card Member on an eligible Card account is also eligible for one statement credit when they use their eligible Additional / Employee Card to pay the application fee once every 4 years for Global Entry or every 4.5 years for TSA PreCheck.
This means in order for your additional card members to qualify, they must also have a Platinum card.”
If I say something, it’s because I’m sure 🙂
My consumer platinum did not receive the one time $200 travel credit received by many. I decided to contact them to see if they offer it to me but the representatitive was adamant. I have escalated to the retention because I have been paying the annual fee for some years now and they offered me 40K points after spending $3,000. Not too bad!
I own Delta Consumer platnium – which of the listed benefits do i get? CLEAR AND TSA precheck? one of them? Gym? cell? Fios? Uber? can you pls list by Delta plat card only?

Thank you dan, so its basically x points per category, free luggage and one companion cert+ TSA but no clear. is that correct? minimal benefits really for $250
Yes
What are the advantages of benefits for 2021, 2022, and 2023 before your next annual fee is due? Is this only better if I decide to cancel my card after the first year? I mean if I will keep it I will still pay annual fee in 2023 so why is taking advantage of it in the 1st year better?
If you decide to cancel or downgrade when the 2nd annual fee posts.
Dowmgrade to what mo fee card?
So, I’ve been an Amex business platinum holder since 1999, and I don’t pay anything per year for my card, although this has the weird side affect of some perks not working with my card (i.e. won’t show up online, or link to enroll in perk leads to endless sign in loop or error pages). Is anyone else like this?
Sounds like you have the long discontinued no fee business platinum credit card, not the business platinum charge card with all these benefits.
I believe you forgot to put in the 10X points at Small Businesses and Dining which only the consumer card has.
Thanks!
Does the same benefits apply to The Amex Charles Schwab costumer card?
Join the military and they waive the annual fee
Do you have any tips how to use the amex hotel credit, there are barely any hotels in the tristate area, and they are very expensive.
Dan which brand of lounges on business cc do you think is best to visit re: ewr, san diego, phoenix
Does anyone have any use for my business plat perks? All I’ve used is the $200 airline incidentals, 200 Dell and 10 cellphone credits. Everything else is on the table
If I make two charges for Clear $119 and $60, will I receive a credit totaling $179, or will Amex only reimburse one charge? Ty!
Worked for me
You’ll get both
I already used my $200 airline credit, which I used and was credit back for already. Come January 1, 2022, I will have another $200 airline credit available to me that I can use? Also, what happens if I use the credit and soon afterwards decide to cancel my card? My annual fee hit my December statement and is due for payment by 1/7/22. Trying to see if I can squeeze in a 2022 airline credit and then cancel?
Yes.
That’s fine after you get the credit.
@dan – Can I double dip clear enrollment purchase a year for me today and then recharge a full year in jan 2022 for my wife and get reimbursed on each ( does it go by calendar year…)
Yes
will the wireless credit work for a wifi bill from verizon?
yes
Hey Dan,
Any advice how to open an Amex if I still owe them money from an old account (about 10yrs) ?
Pay them back….?
Can i do triple dip with chase sapphire reserve?
How can I avoid losing the $200 flight and hotel statement credit from ’22 if i dont have exact travel dayes?

My Plat consumer new fee will be billed Jan. What date ? What amex cc lower af where I can move my UR?
2. What support amex need for biz account ? How is their police for biz?
Isn’t the current business offer better? 120k v 80k?
Any suggestions? I purchased United travel bank with the platinum business card and it did not trigger the airline fee credit. In the past it always has. Anything to do? Thanks!
Did you enroll with UA as your airline first? How long ago did you purchase?
Yes. It’s always been United. The purchase was over a month ago. It’s always been immediate and I’ve never had an issue…..
How much did you purchase at a time?
Isn’t is Dell $200 for 2023, $400 for 2024 and $400 for 2025?
3 different days.
750
750
1000
I used it for my bonus spend.
Need to re enroll January? Or election of this year roll over ?
Wait for credit before canceling/ downgrade? Is there pro rated refund ?
If registered for united on consumer platinum for 2023, need register again 2024, or will it roll over ?
Pls analyze why pay fee for year 2, vs close / product change / where to transfer MR as MR, not an airline specific. So can keep currency
“Virgin Atlantic 1:1 instant transfer” – Should be changed to add Skyteam
If I have the business platinum can I get the consumer platinum and combine the points and get the 35% rebate for all the points?
Yes
Can I open a second business platinum card under same company name? Will I get all the same benefits twice?
To clarify I already have a business platinum from years ago and I want to open another one now.
You can get all the benefits again, but you may not get another signup bonus if you get a popup that says no bonus.
Airline flight credit or airline incidental (aka baggage charge) credits? The AMEX website seems to say the later

Hi
Thanks for the clear info!
What are the chances to get approved for a business card? Is it checking the personal credit?
Also, will I be able to open the consumer and business at once?
It does check your personal credit, no way to know what the odds are without just applying.
You can open both at once.
can you still use the amex points from these cards to pay off the AF on a 1:1 ratio?
Wondering about the construction credit. Would gcs at Home Depot count?
What is the triple dip?
Dan, you said in regards to the Dell credit “Dell allows you to split a charge among 3 credit cards at checkout. If you have multiple Business Platinum cards that means you can get a $200 credit on each one by splitting the charge among multiple cards.”
If the Dell credit is $200 per account and not per card holder, can you explain what you are saying?
Credit is tied to the card. Three cards = $600 credit.
You mentioned the Dell credit is $800, but later in the post you write that it’s $200 twice a year which should be $400.
In year 1 of being a cardholder:
December 2023: $200
January 2024: $200
July 2024: $200
January 2025: $200
Dan and friends, Would you know to answer me?
I recently made a purchase from Dell using the Amex credit, and it arrived damaged. I’ll have to return it (can’t exchange it)
Based on the time left until 2024, returning and wait for the refund is risky.
Would you know, if I place a new order now and return the first one, will Amex leave me with the dell credit? (or at least I can ask for a manual credit via chat?)
Yes, making another order now will work.
Thanks!
I already have the card. if i wish to get it for an additional buiness, how do i go about getting he bonus ?
Hi I just purchased 2 $99 delta tickets, but apparently they were the basic economy and therefore cannot refund to e-credit, only to initial form of payment. cancelled less than an hour after purchasing. will the “trigger” occur and I lost my $200 for the year?
Also is it too late to apply for a new Platinum card for 2023 to triple dip? Can i use the temporary cc number they provide to book travel, dell, cell credit etc?
As long as there is a net balance for eligible purchases you will earn the credit.
You need to enroll for most of the credits so you would have to wait until the card arrives but it ships overnight
Also is there a way to purchase directly to travel bank and avoid having to book and cancel a ticket?
Idk about Delta but there is on United
Wow, super helpful. I have the biz card but I’m going to get the consumer one now!
@dan
I was under the impression from a previous post that it is too late to use the dell credit for this year…
Depends on the items shipping date.
How long does it take to get the card if approved?
You should get a card number instantly.
The card is sent overnight.
If I am an authorized user on an Amex (gold card) and have my own business platinum, can I use the gold card points via the business platinum for the 35% points rebate?
No
How can you triple dip on the wireless phone service credit if it’s a monthly credit?
Hence $140.
how do i take advantage of stacking 2023, 2024, and 2025 credits
Approved, thank you! when will Jan annual fee post? need to wait first to credits for … posted? how many days after annual feww show will refund fee upon cancel card? is there a down grade for Platium?
if i downgrade the card before the credit’s for my clear account and the 200 for travel, posts to my account, will i still get the credit ?
and what’s the cutoff time for canceling, 30 day from the date the renewal fee is posted, or from the statement date ?
Hard question, if anybody knows:
I opened this business card last December. I just redeemed my points for an upcoming trip. I assume the 35% point rebate is scheduled to come already after I shut this card down….
Will I still get the points back?
Pls explain PLAT BIZ:
1.the 35% back on air ticket – if I book chosen airline $1000 ticket in USD, do i get back 35? or is it only if I use amex travel and redeem for amex points? Thank you
2. Any specials on office /biz supply on biz plat?
3. if registered airline for 12/23, need to register again for 2024?
@Dan, is there any way of using/transferring the $15 uber credits per month so they don’t expire?
1) What’s the best use of these points if I choose to cxl the card? I’m being told the points will be seized by Amex unless I move them to a partner before canceling?
2) If I cxl will Amex reverse the credits they have given me in the most recent billing period for $200 United Travel Bank, $200 Fine Hotel Resorts credit, $149 annual Clear credit, and the $15 monthly Uber credit?
I’m trying to understand how the triple dip works because I just got hit with the $695 annual fee for the Consumer Platinum card and did not know I need to move those points out before canceling and not sure how they will treat the already posted credits. Thanks.
How much is global entry? 100? 100 dollars every 4 years is an incredible value?
