Update, 6/1: The 40% transfer bonus for Platinum cardholders to Hilton is now expired!
Update, 5/31: The 40% transfer bonus for Platinum cardholders to Hilton ends today!
Update, 5/22: The transfer ratio has now been fixed for Platinum cardholders and as promised, AMEX has added the 40% bonus for a test transfer I made last week to Hilton.
The Platinum Card® from American Express is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
The company has several promotions for Consumer Platinum cardholders, including a 3rd night free on eligible stays at select Fine Hotels + Resorts® and The Hotel Collection. You can find participating hotels here. That will stack with the card’s $200 annual credit at those hotels and other credits offered through those programs.
There are also targeted AMEX Offers for consumer Platinum cardholders for Hilton, Delta, Hertz, JetBlue, Telecharge, and more.
But also of note is the 40% transfer bonus to Hilton. That offer is valid for all consumer Platinum cardholders that had an active card as of 4/20/24.
The AMEX Membership Rewards transfer ratio to Hilton has improved over the years from 1:1 to 1:1.5 to 1:2.
With a 40% bonus, you would get 2.8 Hilton points for every AMEX point!
Hilton often sells points with a 100% bonus, making them cost 0.5 cents per point. If you value them at that rate, it would give impute a value of 1.4 cents per AMEX point, which isn’t exceptional, but is a good value these days, especially for hotel stays.
Alas, the 40% bonus didn’t show up in my account. I reached out to AMEX for clarification and they said that even if it doesn’t show the bonus, if you have an active AMEX Platinum consumer card opened on or before 4/20/24 that you will get the bonus even if the transfer page doesn’t show a bonus, though it may be delayed.
And now AMEX has updated the page to state that as well:
I transferred 1,000 points to test it out, and only received 2,000 points. But I assume I’ll get the bonus points eventually.
Typically, it will only make sense to transfer if you have a specific redemption in mind or if you need more points to have enough to redeem for a 5 night stay.
However, the last time there was a 40% Hilton bonus was in June 2021, so this is a very strong offer.
If you have a Hilton credit card or elite status you get the 5th night free on all award redemptions.
When will it make sense to buy points? An overwater villa with a private pool in the Conrad Maldives can cost $1,000-$2,000 after tax, but its bookable for just 120K Hilton points. That’s like redeeming 42.8K AMEX points from this deal. If you have a Hilton credit card or elite status and stay for 5 nights you’ll need just 96K Hilton points or 34.3K AMEX points/night.
I wrote about the trick to finding saver award availability here. In short, use flexible date search and try booking between 1 and 5 nights, as minimum stay requirements can vary.
5 nights in the Maldives is pretty much the definition of Heaven on Earth. Read more about the Conrad Maldives here.

The Grand Wailea Maui is 110K Hilton points/night, compared to paid rates of $1,000-$2,000 per night after taxes. That’s like redeeming 39.3K AMEX points from this deal. If you have a Hilton credit card or elite status and stay for 5 nights you’ll need just 88K Hilton points or 31.4K AMEX points/night.
The Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills is 120K Hilton points/night, compared to paid rates of $1,000-$1,500 per night after taxes. That’s like redeeming 42.8K AMEX points from this deal. If you have a Hilton credit card or elite status and stay for 5 nights you’ll need just 96K Hilton points or 34.3K AMEX points/night.
The hotel has a Rolls Royce house car that can take you to the excellent nearby kosher restaurants.

Most Hilton hotels are capped at a cost of 120K points per night for a standard room, but the Waldorf Astoria Maldives costs 150K points/night. That’s like redeeming 53.6K AMEX points from this deal. If you have a Hilton credit card or elite status and stay for 5 nights you’ll need 120K points/night or 42.9K AMEX points/night.
That’s an incredible value compared to the paid rates of $2,000-$4,000 after taxes:
The Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal is 120K points per night as well. It’s Trip Advisor’s top ranked hotel in Cabo and is Travel + Leisure’s World’s top resort in Mexico.
With a 5 night stay you can pay 96K Hilton points per night with the 5th night free award that is available to Hilton cardholders and elites.
Even the base rooms come with a private plunge pool. That’s an incredible value compared to the paid rates of $1,500-$3,000 after taxes:
Chabad of Cabo has tourist information on their website. They’re located just 1.2 miles from the Waldorf! Discuss more about Cabo on DDF here.
The Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem charges 95K points per night when they have standard room availability. That’s like redeeming 33.9K AMEX points from this deal. If you have a Hilton credit card or elite status and stay for 5 nights you’ll need just 76K Hilton points or 27.1K AMEX points/night.
The Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem is one of the finest hotels in Israel.

Breakfast is free on points stays if you have Gold or Diamond status, which you can get just by having a Hilton credit card.
With a breakfast like this, you may not even be hungry for dinner…

Will you transfer AMEX points to Hilton with this transfer bonus? What aspirational hotel redemption are you gunning for?

So I transferred yesterday and similarly my 40% bonus hasn’t shown up. Seems concerning. Did they tell you when you’ll see the bonus show up?
No, just that it will post with a delay, as the site now says.
Thanks. Does Hilton “Gold” status get you the 5th Night free on award redemptions?
Yes, all status does.
Is business platinum also part of it?
No
Nicely written. I enjoyed the read.
Great roundup.
Thanks
Member since 1984???
🙂
First year it was offered, by invitation only, according to wikipedia. We should not be surprised lol.
Well they had to celebrate Dan’s birth somehow.
I do see the 40% when logging in to my consumer Amex, thanks!
For some reason though, checking 3-4 different months in the Waldorf Jerusalem is showing it at 285k/night (when cash prices are $540-$650 nt for base room)!
What am I doing wrong – or is the Waldorf Jerusalem simply not offering the usual 95k or so when there’s availability for the year?
“In short, use flexible date search and try booking between 1 and 5 nights, as minimum stay requirements can vary.”
Got it, thanks again!
Dan, so what’s the math now with the 2.8 bonus? Is it like .3 a point or less? Can’t figure this out. Thank you!!
To work the math that way, you would have to assign a value per AMEX point.
If your value is 1 cent per point, then the cost per Hilton point would be 0.357 cents each.
My spouse and I both have personal plats and neither of us had the 40% offer showing but do have that disclaimer that you have. Will you post an update back here when you get the 40%? I’d like to know it or will be a relatively seamless process or i’m going to have to run after them for the promised points before I transfer. Thank you.
They told me that if you have an active consumer plat and it was opened on or before 4/20 that it will post automatically…eventually.
Both cards have been open for a couple of years. So I guess we can do a transfer for a stay we want to do and how for the best.
My account finally updated today to show the 40% bonus and it calculates it properly before finalizing the transfer. I’m glad I waited to do it.
Actually, AMEX just sent over my 40% bonus points as well. 😀
Oh cool . Great that they did that automatically and that they finally fixed it so everyone eligible sees it properly for the last few days of the promo.
What about the Amex Schwab platinum is this included as well?
My card shows the bonus and 2.8 per Amex point transferred immediately . I would be cautious if it’s not showing up at transfer time
I feel the same way but I’m sure Dan will make sure somehow that Amex abides by their promise :).
It’s already fixed it shows 1 to 2.8 as soon as I try to transfer
This seems to show up at 1:2.8 on my wife’s account but not mine. I have multiple Platinum cards. I was able to transfer on my wife’s account at the 1:2.8 ratio and immediately see the points. I am kicking myself since I may have just transferred at the 1:2 ratio on my account and may not “quality”
Has anyone’s offers actually posted?
Made a JB purchase over a week ago, no email and no credit yet.
Can you transfer Amex MR points between consumer and business accounts?
You can have them linked to the same account.
Did you have to create a case and keep following up? I transferred 180K last Thursday and the bonus is still missing. I had them create a case and was told I would hear back in 10 business days.
I didn’t make a case. Posted automatically today.
I noticed that Marriot has a 40% bonus from Chase. Is that considered a strong offer?
