On the topic of Tehran… Turkish is one of the few airlines that has not suspended their flights to or over Iran (also Qatar and Oman Air). As far as I can tell practically all other airlines have rerouted. Some airlines rerouted immediately after the shooting when it was suspected but not official, while most others rerouted after Iran admitted
Even though tlv-bound flights from NA and Europe will of course not pass over Iran, this gives you a sense of the corporate culture — who puts customer safety above all else; who is worried about being “PC” or somewhat blindly playing by the rules (eg Lufthansa which continued overflights until Iran officially admitted); and for whom politics trumps safety
Of course with each passing day, the flight risks go down and no doubt eventually will go back to “normal.” But the few days after the incident were definitely revealing about each airlines’ attitudes
In Qatar Airlines’ case, they wouldn’t be able to operate at all without overflying Iran, given the GCC blockade.
Not sure that is true… Qatar today flies over Iraq (I see some flights from Europe going via Iraq). Other flights are going over Iran (including some flights to the us). So I don’t think it is correct to say the gcc blockade is forcing Qatar to go over Iran, either looking at the existing flight paths or just by looking at a map of the gulf (since Iraq is not in the blockade)
i flew Ukraine and loved it. Yes the xtra security scan they do b4 entering airport security is madening, but overall, I’d take them over Turkish any day of the week…

If you miss your flight’s check-in time by even one minute, you can kiss your thousands of bucks goodbye. Those Ottoman anti-semites won’t book you on another flight even on standby. No standard decency like on American carriers. They won’t refund you a penny, no matter what good excuse you can come up with and they won’t let you on the next flight even with a fee. It’s like you never had a ticket.

If you are looking to fly through Europe, there are very few clean hands. Ukrainian collaborators aggressively assisted in the Holocaust and some Poles were more than happy to assist the Germans and take over their property (watch the documentary Shoah). Same with French Vichy collaborators who went above and beyond what the Germans asked in deporting Jews. Turkey did not “fight” in WWII and permitted its Jews to emigrate to Israel in the late 40s.
Make sure you have enough time to connect. The new airport is beautiful, but huge, and transiting from US flight to the TLV flight(s) isn’t smooth.
How much time you say is needed for connection?
Minimum connect time is 75 minutes, but having 100 minutes is probably a good idea.
Return flights to Chicago are terrible, 25-30 hours unless you want to pay an extra $200

Affording to “keep your child safe” is very relative, and there’s no limit to the matter.
Statistically there’s exponentially higher risk of being hit my a car or lightning. So avoid the streets and please don’t endanger your child by letting them play outside when there’s a rain in the forecast.
(Hey Dan, how about start with quitting eating out and feeding your kids all that terrible junk food. Not just a “chance” at harming a child’s (and one’s self) wellbeing way more than the remote chance of injurious airplane turbulence, but a definite way of improving quality of life.)
Give me a break. Every person chooses what risks they’re willing to take in life (surely we can list many activities you partook of in your travels which were statistically much more dangerous), which insurances they want to buy (the sky’s the limit there too), etc etc.

I’ve flied myself and with a stopover.’When flying myself I think I would rather save the extra $325 and do the stopover.
However when flying with my children I would pay extra money to get there quicker with less time spent on the plane.
